Hotchkiss Story
For nearly 30 years we have been making solid oak furniture here at our mill in South Derbyshire.Thomas Hotchkiss founded the company in the mid 90s after serving his apprenticeship with Howard Knott in Tideswell where he learnt many of the woodworking skills he uses to this day.
Thomas has always believed in the personal touch, right through from designing and making the piece, through to delivering it into your home. This is still a strong ethos in the business and Thomas remains the main point of contact for ongoing commissions.
We are well known throughout the country for our Tradestands at country shows and fairs. In the early days, Thomas exhibited at the local agricultural shows in Derbyshire, but now travels as far as Scotland and the Scots love our Harris Tweed sofas!
In 2023 we have a full calendar of events where you can see, touch and try our products.
Our showroom in Tutbury, Staffordshire is where we have our main displays for you to visit.
We only open the showroom on Saturdays, but if you wish to call in the weekdays, please arrange a no obligation appointment.

We manufacture all our products here in Derbyshire. The chairs, tables and cabinetwork are made in our mill by Thomas and his team of time served craftsmen, and the upholstery work is all done in our Long Eaton workshops in an area renowned as the “sofa capital” of Great Britain.
We are the envy of many, for our range of handmade “Windsor chairs”which are all made at our mill, where we carry out all the unique processes in chair making such as bending the wood using steam.In our team we employ master chair maker, Mark Essex who has worked all his life in the business and is a master at steam bending green oak!
As well as making traditional chairs, we have teamed up with some of Britains best furniture designers to bring to market some truly exceptional pieces. You will find our chairs in high end homes and restaurants everywhere from Paris to LA!
